High Dynamic Range Labs
As a key strand of moving image research activity, UWE Bristol hosts a series of events exploring High Dynamic Range (HDR) cinematography. These laboratories build upon prior research conducted by Professor Terry Flaxton and are held in association with Bristol Vision Institute and the University of Bristol.
An initial event took place during the Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival in September 2014 involving cinematographer Geoff Boyle FBKS and artists Rik Lander and Gina Czarneki. This led to subsequent events organised by Professor Terry Flaxton with Professor Stefan Grandinetti from Stuttgart Media University and Dr Marc Price formerly of BBC R&D and Bristol University during which equipment and support was provided by Dolby Industries, Esprit Film and Television, Films@59 and SIM2.
Findings from the labs has been presented to the Science and Technology Committee at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, at the British Society of Cinematographers’ Expo and featured in Professor Terry Flaxton’s chapter in the edited collection Digital Light (2015): http://www.openhumanitiespress.org/books/titles/digital-light/.
